Prayagraj Mahakumbh 2025: The administration has made elaborate arrangements for the smooth conduct of the Mahakumbh fair and unprecedented security measures have been taken in the fair area as well as in Prayagraj city and surrounding places.
The Maha Kumbh Mela, a symbol of India’s eternal culture, spirituality and faith, has started today in the Sangam city of Prayagraj. Today is the Amrit Snan of Paush Purnima. Since morning, devotees are taking a dip in the confluence of Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati (invisible) river. It is being told that today about 1 crore devotees will take a dip in the Ganga. The first royal bath will be on the day of Makar Sankranti. Maha Kumbh is considered to be the biggest fair in the world, in which 45 crore devotees including sadhus and saints are expected to come from various parts of the country and abroad.
All the Akharas who have come to Maha Kumbh will do Kalpavas on the banks of Sangam from today. As per the rules, first of all Juna Akhara will take a royal bath. After this, one by one all the Akharas will take a dip of faith in the Triveni Sangam. Maha Kumbh Mela is held once every 12 years. In Maha Kumbh, saints and devotees from all over the world take a holy dip. In this religious event, Shahi Snan (Royal Bath) has special importance, which is also called Amrit Snan. It is believed that taking a dip in holy rivers during Shahi Snan atones for sins and leads to attainment of virtue. Amrit Snan brings people closer to spirituality.
The Maha Kumbh Mela of Prayagraj is spread over about 4000 hectares of land and is divided into 25 sectors. The Uttar Pradesh government has declared the Maha Kumbh Mela area as the 76th district of the state. This year’s Maha Kumbh is considered very auspicious, because according to astrologers, a rare combination of planets is being formed after 144 years. On this day, the auspicious position of the planets Sun, Moon, Saturn and Jupiter is being formed. It is being told that such a rare astronomical coincidence was formed during the Samudra Manthan.
For the Maha Kumbh, the administration has prepared a total of 41 ghats on the Sangam coast. Of these, 10 are permanent ghats, while the remaining 31 ghats are temporary. Sangam Ghat is the most prominent and important ghat of Prayagraj. Here the confluence of three holy rivers – Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati (invisible) takes place. That is why it is also known as Triveni Ghat.
Akharas are the main center of attraction in Maha Kumbh. Akharas were started by Adi Shankaracharya. It is said that he had formed organizations of sages skilled in the art of weapons to protect Sanatan. Currently there are a total of 13 Akharas, which are divided into three categories – Shaiva, Vaishnava and Udasin. There are a total of 7 Akharas of Shaiva sect, their followers worship Lord Shiva. There are 3 Akharas of Vaishnava sect, their followers worship Lord Vishnu and his incarnations. There are 3 Akharas of Udasin sect, their followers worship ‘Om’. Om is a symbol of eternal power.
This time around 45 crore devotees are expected to come to Maha Kumbh. Devotees from not only the whole country but also from all over the world will take a dip in the confluence. The first royal bath in Maha Kumbh 2025 will be on the occasion of Makar Sankranti. An estimated 7 crore devotees are expected to take a holy dip in the Triveni Sangam on this day. Other dates for royal bath in Maha Kumbh are ‘Mauni Amavasya’ on January 29, ‘Basant Panchami’ on February 3, ‘Maghi Purnima’ on February 12 and ‘Mahashivratri’ on February 26. Maha Kumbh will conclude with the royal bath on the day of Mahashivratri.
In order to provide quick medical facilities to the saints and devotees in case of any adverse situation, a 20-bed hospital has been set up in each sector in addition to a central hospital. More than 300 divers have been deployed on all the ghats to deal with any emergency during bathing. Many water ambulances have also been deployed. 7-tier security arrangements have been made in the Maha Kumbh with the deployment of NSG commandos and UP police personnel.
AI-powered cameras, drones and anti-drone systems have been installed for effective crowd management and monitoring at the Maha Kumbh Mela. Apart from spotters, 15,000 civil police personnel have been deployed to keep an eye on suspicious people at the Maha Kumbh. 102 checkpoints have been set up on 7 major routes to monitor and control the entry points of the fair area. 113 drones have been deployed to ensure security and monitor the Sangam and the waterways around it.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and state officials estimate that Maha Kumbh 2025 could contribute Rs 25,000 crore to government revenues. This could result in economic benefits of Rs 2 trillion. The event is expected to benefit local self-help groups, artisans, hoteliers, homestay owners, restaurant operators and food vendors. Major brands such as Dabur, Mother Dairy and ITC are estimated to spend Rs 3,000 crore.
To help pilgrims identify their location and lodge complaints related to electricity issues, more than 50,000 QR codes have been installed on electricity poles in the Maha Kumbh Mela area spread across 25 sectors, a minister in the Uttar Pradesh government said. Uttar Pradesh Urban Development and Energy Minister AK Sharma said that more than 50,000 QR codes have been installed on electricity poles, which will make it easier for devotees to determine their location within the Mela area.
Union Culture and Tourism Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat said that more than 15 lakh foreign tourists are expected to visit the Maha Kumbh. He said that the Ministry of Tourism has set up a tent city providing facilities like Ayurveda, Yoga and Panchkarma keeping in mind the foreign guests. A ‘Kalagram’ has been built on 10 acres in Sector 7 of the Maha Kumbh, where Indian cultural heritage will be displayed.
Kalagram will be one of the main attractions of the Maha Kumbh Mela, which will feature various cultural performances. It will have a grand entrance gate with replicas of Char Dham, 12 Jyotirlingas, an Anant Kumbh exhibition and 7 cultural courtyards showcasing the diversity of the country. More than 230 craftsmen will showcase the traditional art of India. The events will be held at various places including Kalagram, Ganga Pandal, Jhunsi, Nagvasuki and Arail over the next 45 days.
The fair administration estimates that the maximum 21% people are likely to reach Maha Kumbh from Jaunpur route, while 18% devotees will come from Rewa and Banda route. Similarly, 16% devotees can come from Varanasi route, 14% from Kanpur route, 12% from Mirzapur route. 10% people are expected to come from Lucknow route and 9% from Pratapgarh route. There are mainly 7 routes for entry in Prayagraj. People coming by bus and private vehicle will reach Sangam via these routes.
The Maha Kumbh district administration has built a total of 102 small and big parking lots in the fair area. 70% of these parking lots are within a radius of 5 km from the bathing ghat. The remaining 30% parking lots are within a radius of 5 to 10 km. There are 24 satellite parking lots, out of which 18 have been built in the fair area and 6 in Prayagraj city. Drinking water, toilets, first aid, public address system are available here.
Indian Railways has started 3000 special trains for Maha Kumbh. These trains will make more than 13 thousand trips. Apart from Prayagraj Junction, 8 sub-stations have been built. These sub-stations have been divided into three zones of the railways – North Central Railway, Northern Railway and Northeast Railway. Trains on Kanpur, Deen Dayal Upadhyay, Satna, Jhansi route will stop at Prayagraj Junction and will leave from here for return. Routine trains coming from Satna, Jhansi and Deen Dayal Upadhyay stations will be stopped at Naini and Chheoki Junction. Special trains coming to Maha Kumbh for major bathing days will also be stopped at Naini and Chheoki Junction.
Trains coming from Lucknow, Ayodhya and Jaunpur will be stopped at Phaphamau station, Prayag station and Prayagraj Sangam station. On the days of royal bath, trains will not be allowed to go to Prayagraj Sangam station. Trains coming from Kanpur will be stopped at Subedarganj station. Trains coming from Varanasi, Gorakhpur and Mau will be stopped at Jhunsi and Rambagh stations. Rambagh station is inside Prayagraj city, so there are preparations to stop trains at Jhunsi on the days of royal bath.
Separate routes have been made for entry and exit at all 9 stations including Prayagraj Junction. For example, entry will be from platform number one at Prayagraj Junction, exit from the platform has been arranged from the Civil Lines end. The distance of Sangam beach from here is about 12 kilometers. Railways has issued toll free number 1800 4199 139 for Maha Kumbh. Any kind of inquiry related to railways for Maha Kumbh can be made on this number.
There will be flights from Prayagraj to Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Lucknow, Indore, Ahmedabad, Kolkata, Jaipur, Bhubaneshwar, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Bhopal, Chennai, Pune, Goa, Nagpur, Jammu, Patna, Goa, Ayodhya, Raipur, Dehradun, Jabalpur, Chandigarh, Bilaspur. That is, devotees from the above cities can reach Prayagraj directly by air and after taking a holy dip in the confluence, they can catch a flight back from Prayagraj directly to their city.
The fair administration has made extensive arrangements for the stay of the devotees coming to Maha Kumbh. Arrangements have been made for the stay of 10 lakh people in the fair area. There are both free and paid arrangements. For example, if you want luxury arrangements, you can stay in the Dome City on the banks of Sangam. Its rent per day ranges from Rs 80 thousand to Rs 1.25 lakh. A tent city of 2000 camps has been built around it. To stay here, you will have to pay from Rs 3 thousand to Rs 30 thousand. Booking for this will also have to be done in advance.
There are 42 luxury hotels in Prayagraj city. All have their own websites through which you can know about them and make bookings. Apart from this, there are 100 shelters in the fair area, each shelter has 250 beds. More than 10 thousand voluntary organizations have made arrangements for accommodation and food for the devotees. If you come by train and get down at Prayagraj Junction, there are 50 hotels around the station where you can stay. Apart from this, Prayagraj Municipal Corporation has built night shelters outside the station. All arrangements have been made in it to protect from cold.
A total of 3000 bed night shelters have been built around Sangam. There are a total of 204 guest houses and 90 Dharamshalas in Mahakumbh district, all of which have accommodation facilities. Houses in the area around Sangam have been converted into PG houses. The tourism department has given them license and training. You can stay here. Devotees can take the help of maps to roam around the Mahakumbh fair. This time Google Map has made a different arrangement for the fair. Everything from all the bridges, ashrams, akharas, roads to the fair area has been shown.

Devotees and tourists coming to Maha Kumbh can also visit other tourist and religious places of Prayagraj after bathing in Triveni Sangam and visiting the fair. These include the temple of Lat Hanuman Ji, Akshayvat, Patalpuri Temple, Mankameshwar Temple, Nagvasuki Temple, Shankar Vimanamandapam which come under the Maha Kumbh Mela area. Apart from this, you can visit places like Chandrashekhar Azad Park, Swaraj Bhavan, Khusro Bagh, Nishadraj Park etc. in the city.
For the devotees coming to Prayagraj Maha Kumbh, all the food items and options will be available in the fair area itself. But if you are going to Prayagraj, then definitely enjoy the Kachori-Sabzi, Dahi-Jalebi, Samosa, Rasgulla there. The 168-year-old shop Netram Kachori located in Katra area of the city serves excellent Kachori and Sabzi. You can eat snacks at the 100-year-old shop Hari & Sons. If any devotee wants to see the aerial view of the entire Mahakumbh fair, he can ride a helicopter by paying only Rs 1296. Earlier this fare was Rs 3000, but the government has reduced it. Uttar Pradesh Tourism and Culture Minister Jaiveer Singh said that there will be an 8-minute helicopter ride.
