Story of Karva Chauth

There are different stories and tales about the origins of the festival.

A stunning princess named Veeravati once lived a very long time ago. Veeravati married a king. She visited her parents’ home for the first Karva Chauth after her marriage. She followed a tight fast after sunrise. The queen, however, was too weak to withstand the demands of fasting. As night fell, Veeravati became too weak and fainted. Seven devoted brothers surrounded the queen. They chose to deceive their sister in order to put an end to her quickly because they couldn’t bear her situation.

At the neighboring hill, they built a fire, and they requested their sister to check for glow. They reassured her that she could break her fast because it was moonlight and the moon had risen. When the queen finished dinner, she got shocking news: her husband, the king, had died. She was devastated and rushed to his palace. On her way, she met Lord Shiva and his wife, Goddess Parvati. Goddess Parvati explained, “The king died because you broke your fast by mistake, seeing a fake moon.” But when the queen apologized, Parvati forgave her and said, “Your husband will come back to life, but he’ll be ill.”

When the queen arrived at the palace, she found the king unconscious with hundreds of needles stuck in his body. Day by day, the queen carefully removed one needle at a time. A year passed, and on the next Karva Chauth day, only one needle was left in the king’s body. The queen fasted strictly on Karva Chauth day. While she was out buying Karva for the prayer ceremony, her maid removed the last needle from the king’s body. The king woke up, mistakenly thinking the maid was his queen. When the real queen returned, the king didn’t recognize her and made her work as a maid.

Despite being treated unfairly, Veeravati remained devoted to her faith and faithfully observed the Karva Chauth fast. When the king was about to leave for another kingdom, he asked the real queen (now working as a maid) if she wanted anything. The queen requested a pair of identical dolls from the king. He granted her wish. Then, she sang a meaningful song: “The maid has become the queen, and the queen has become the maid.” The king asked Veeravati why she sang that song. She shared her entire story. Moved by her words, the king regretted his mistake and restored Veeravati as queen. Her devotion and faith won back her husband’s love and Goddess Parvati’s blessings.

According to the another tale, women used to enter into arranged marriages and were required to live with their new in-laws’ family, who were all strangers to her. As a result, this celebration became customary in order for them to meet and become lifelong friends or Dharam Behn.
