Covid-Like HMPV Virus spreads, Asian Nations Keeping an Eye on the Situation
As respiratory disease cases are predicted to increase over the winter, China announced earlier this week that it was testing a system for pneumonia of unknown origin.
Amid fears of an HMPV (human metapneumovirus) outbreak in China, the Union Health Ministry’s National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) in India is keeping a careful eye on respiratory and seasonal influenza infections in the nation, according to government sources cited by news agency ANI.
“We will continue to monitor the situation closely, validate the information, and update accordingly,” the sources were cited as adding. The health body is apparently in contact with international bodies over the HMPV outbreak in China, however the reports are still unverified.
“The data from December 16-22, indicates a recent rise in acute respiratory infections, including seasonal influenza, rhinovirus, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and human metapneumovirus (HMPV), but the overall scale and intensity of respiratory infectious diseases in China this year is lower than last year,” according to sources citing an update from the WPRO (Western Pacific Region), one of the six regions of the World Health Organization (WHO). In the northern hemisphere, a seasonal rise in respiratory infections is anticipated, especially during the winter months.
According to a number of reports, hospitals and cemeteries in China are finding it difficult to handle the increase in respiratory illnesses, especially those caused by the human metapneumovirus (HMPV). Healthcare facilities, particularly children’s hospitals, are concerned about the situation since they are apparently under stress from a rapid increase in pneumonia and “white lung” cases—a term used to characterize severe pneumonia symptoms.
China steps up monitoring for emerging respiratory illness
With incidence of some respiratory infections predicted to rise during the winter, the Chinese diseases control body said late in December 2024 that it was establishing a monitoring system for pneumonia of unknown origin, according to Reuters.
The nation’s action was intended to help authorities establish procedures for dealing with unknown viruses and the ensuing circumstances. This is in an effort to improve upon its previous level of readiness when the coronavirus, COVID-19, first appeared five years ago. According to Reuters, which cited state broadcast CCTV, the National Disease Control and preventive Administration would set up a process for laboratories to report and for disease control and preventive organizations to examine, confirm, and manage such cases.
At the time, Kan Biao, another official, stated that China was expected to see a variety of respiratory infectious infections over the winter and spring. He stated that there would be fewer cases overall this year than last year, but he gave no other information.
Pathogens such as the rhinovirus and the human metapneumovirus were among the cases found in China in December; the frequency of HMPV cases in individuals under the age of 14 increased. However, neither the WHO nor the Chinese government have verified any official government regarding the purported HMPV outbreak.
